Why split at the source
Collecting everything into one account and paying people later creates reconciliation work and compliance risk. Splitting at the time of payment keeps each party’s share clear.
Define the split model
Decide whether you charge a flat fee, a percentage or both, and who covers processing costs. Keep the model simple enough to explain to a seller in one sentence.
Use sub-accounts for sellers
Give each seller a virtual wallet under your master account so balances, statements and payouts are separated by design.
Listen to webhooks
Use signed webhooks for payment, escrow and payout events and make your handlers idempotent so retries never double-pay.
Plan for disputes and refunds
Decide in advance how a refund affects each party’s share, and hold funds in escrow for high-value orders.
